Intra-operative ultrasound for spinal dural arteriovenous fistulas: A simple technique for surgical reassurance
1Department of Neurosurgery, Townsville University Hospital, Queensland 4814, Australia.
Background:
Spinal dural arteriovenous fistulas (DAVFs) are the most common vascular malformations of the spine. Whilst surgical disconnection remains the mainstay of treatment, intraoperative localisation and verification of complete disconnection of the DAVF can be challenging.
Objective:
To describe the utility of intraoperative ultrasound (IOUS) as a simple, cost-effective, and user-friendly adjunct to ensure surgical success.
Conclusion:
Used in conjunction with established methods, IOUS provides real-time surgical reassurance and helps confirm the complete disconnection of the DAVF.
