Abstract:
Mechanical circulatory support (MCS) devices, such as intra-aortic balloon pumps and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation, play a critical role in the management of cardiogenic shock by providing hemodynamic support and improving end-organ perfusion. However, their implementation in low-resource settings is hindered by significant challenges, including high costs, limited infrastructure, a shortage of trained personnel, and delayed patient referral. This review examines the barriers to MCS utilization in resource-constrained environments, including ethical dilemmas and disparities in access. It explores practical, cost-effective strategies to improve availability and optimize outcomes.
