Area of Science:
- Adolescent mental health
- Community-based interventions
- Implementation science
Background:
- Adolescent mental health services are in high demand, necessitating scalable interventions.
- A treatment gap exists for underserved youth, particularly youth of color.
- Community-initiated models offer a pathway to bridge this gap.
Purpose of the Study:
- To assess the feasibility of implementing an adapted World Health Organization Early Adolescent Skills for Emotions (EASE) program.
- To evaluate the adapted EASE program for underserved youth of color in New York City (NYC).
Main Methods:
- A single-arm cluster feasibility study involving at least 10 community-based organization sites in NYC.
- Enrollment of at least 100 youth for a 7-week adapted EASE intervention, with surveys at baseline, post-intervention, and 3-month follow-up.
- Assessment of caregiver curriculum acceptability and helper fidelity, competency, and acceptability through interviews and surveys.
Main Results:
- Feasibility data on recruitment, retention, and intervention delivery will be collected.
- Acceptability data from youth, caregivers, and staff will be gathered.
- Implementation outcomes such as helper fidelity and curriculum acceptability will be assessed.
Conclusions:
- The study will contribute to understanding brief, task-sharing interventions for urban underserved youth of color.
- Favorable findings could inform low-cost programs to address the adolescent mental health treatment gap.
- Results will guide future adequately powered trials and government policy.
