A structured stretching program significantly reduced work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs) for operating room (OR) nurses. This feasible intervention promotes well-being and supports occupational health in surgical settings.

Area of Science:

  • Occupational Health
  • Musculoskeletal Disorders
  • Exercise Interventions

Background:

  • Work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs) are prevalent among operating room (OR) nurses due to prolonged static postures and repetitive tasks.
  • Nurses in surgical settings face unique challenges contributing to discomfort and potential injury.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the effectiveness of a structured stretching exercise program in reducing musculoskeletal discomfort among OR nurses.
  • To assess the feasibility and impact of a low-cost intervention on nurse well-being.

Main Methods:

  • A quasi-experimental, two-group pretest-posttest design was used with 40 OR nurses experiencing musculoskeletal pain.
  • The intervention group (n=20) performed 30 minutes of stretching five days/week for six weeks.

  • Musculoskeletal discomfort in 15 body regions was assessed using the Nordic Musculoskeletal Questionnaire.
  • Main Results:

    • The intervention group demonstrated a significantly greater reduction in overall musculoskeletal discomfort compared to the control group (p < .001).
    • Significant improvements were observed in the right shoulder, lower back, and left wrist/hand regions.
    • The program showed a statistically significant positive impact on nurse well-being.

    Conclusions:

    • A structured stretching program is a viable and cost-effective strategy for mitigating WMSDs in OR nurses.
    • Implementing exercise interventions is recommended for occupational health promotion within perioperative environments.
