Summary

Natto Red Yeast Rice (NRYR) effectively lowers low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) when used alone. Combining NRYR with simvastatin showed a trend towards further LDL-C reduction but was not statistically significant at three months.

Background:

  • Limited clinical evidence exists regarding the efficacy of NRYR in lipid regulation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the effectiveness of NRYR in lowering low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C).
  • To assess the impact of NRYR, alone and in combination with simvastatin, on lipid profiles.

Main Methods:

  • A 3-month randomized controlled trial involving 1,110 participants.
  • Four intervention groups: placebo, NRYR (1,950 mg/d), simvastatin (20 mg/d), and combination therapy.
  • Primary outcome: change in LDL-C levels assessed using linear mixed models.

Main Results:

  • NRYR, simvastatin, and the combination therapy significantly reduced LDL-C compared to placebo (P < 0.001).
  • The combination therapy showed a numerically lower LDL-C than simvastatin alone at 1 month, but this difference was not significant at 3 months.
