Experiences of Postpartum Fatigue Among Vietnamese American Women

To explore the experience of postpartum fatigue among Vietnamese American women.

Descriptive phenomenology informed by Colaizzi's methodological approach.

Multiple geographic regions of the United States.

A purposive snowball sample of 10 Vietnamese American women who experienced postpartum fatigue.

Using Colaizzi's method of data analysis for descriptive phenomenological research, I followed the seven steps of familiarization, identification of significant statements, formulation of meaning, clustering of formulated meanings into themes, exhaustive description, formulation of fundamental structure, and validation.

I developed three themes that represented Vietnamese American women's experiences of postpartum fatigue: Not Enough Time for Restorative Sleep, Struggling to Live Up to Immigrant Parents' Cultural Expectations, and Spiraled Into Postpartum Depression Symptoms. Participants suggested opportunities to manage postpartum fatigue by asking for practical help, strengthening social support from partners, and promoting energy conservation.

Findings revealed insights and accounts about postpartum fatigue from the perspectives of Vietnamese American women. Some of their experiences were similar to those of other American women, but for most participants fatigue was compounded by their families' pressure to conform to Vietnamese cultural practices. Maternity care clinicians should provide early screening and offer resources to manage fatigue, educate women about safe sleep practices, and reinforce those practices with trusted family members present. These strategies can improve maternal-child health outcomes.
