Association of proprietary smartphone application engagement and attendance at postpartum visit

Background:
We hypothesized that patients who engaged with a proprietary smartphone application designed to improve maternal care would be more likely to attend a comprehensive postpartum visit.
Methods:
After receiving institutional review board approval and a waiver of informed consent, study investigators collected data on patients who delivered live-born infants at Baylor Scott & White hospitals located in College Station, Round Rock, and Temple, Texas, from September 1, 2024, to June 30, 2025. We performed a bivariate analysis between patients who did and did not engage with the proprietary smartphone application and a multivariate logistic regression with variables of interest to determine which characteristics were independently associated with attendance at a comprehensive postpartum visit.
Results:
There were 4153 patients in the final analysis, and 492 patients (12%) engaged with a proprietary smartphone application at least once. In multivariate logistic regression, engagement with a propriety smartphone application at least once was independently associated with attendance at a comprehensive postpartum visit (adjusted odds ratio 1.58; 95% confidence interval 1.14-2.18; P = 0.006).
Discussion:
Patients who engaged with a proprietary smartphone application at least once were 58% more likely to have attended a comprehensive postpartum visit within 12 weeks of delivery.
