Abstract:
Supramolecular chirality determines the physiological function of biological macromolecules, including DNA and amyloid fibrils. However, factors that determine the supramolecular organization of such macromolecules remain poorly understood. In the current study, we demonstrate that the supramolecular chirality of amyloid fibrils can be controlled by a single amino acid and its protonation state. These findings are critically important for understanding the mechanism of self-assembly of functional and pathological amyloid aggregates.
