Introduction:
parental infant feeding practices (IFP) contribute to healthy infant weight or excess weight. Therefore, it is important to have a questionnaire for identification of mealtime structure and non-responsiveness IFP.
Objectives:
to evaluate the psychometric properties of the Psychometric Properties of the Feeding Practices and Structure Questionnaire (FPSQ) Milk Feeding Version in Spanish, translated and adapted for use with mothers and fathers of infants up to 6 months of age.
Methods:
a cross-sectional study was conducted, involving translation, back-translation, adaptation, and validation of the psychometric properties of the FPSQ Milk Feeding Version. Participated 189 mothers or fathers of infants up to 6 months of age residing in Northeast Mexico. Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), invariance and internal consistency analysis were performed.
Results:
the goodness-of-fit indices were CFI = 0.943, TLI = 0.931, GFI = 0.975, RMSEA = 0.05, SRMR = 0.07. All items in the refined model demonstrated adequate factor loadings (> 0.400, p < 0.001). It presented metric (ΔRMSEA = 0.007), scalar (ΔRMSEA = 0.002) and strict (ΔRMSEA = 0.004) invariance. The analysis identified four factors: feeding on-demand vs. routine feeding (α = 0.726), using food to calm (α = 0.782), persuasive feeding (α = 0.591), and parent-led feeding (α = 0.649).
Conclusions:
the FPSQ Milk Feeding Version in Spanish demonstrates adequate reliability for identifying both mealtime structured and non-responsiveness feeding practices. The development and implementation of interventions aimed at promoting responsiveness feeding practices and supporting more appropriate intake self-regulation in formula-fed infants are recommended.
