Stress Prevention and Stress Management Techniques VI01:30

Stress Prevention and Stress Management Techniques VI

Adopting a healthier lifestyle often requires overcoming significant challenges, but leveraging psychological, social, and cultural resources can facilitate meaningful change. Effective self-change hinges on understanding and applying key tools such as motivation and goal setting, which help sustain efforts toward long-term health benefits.
Motivation and Self-Determination

Ethnic Identity within a Larger Culture01:27

Ethnic Identity within a Larger Culture

Adolescents from ethnic minority backgrounds face a multifaceted journey in forming their identities, shaped by the intersections of cultural expectations and personal exploration. For these adolescents, identity formation involves not only typical developmental challenges but also navigating the perceptions and attitudes of the majority culture. As they grow, adolescents in ethnic minority groups often become increasingly aware of stereotypes, social biases, and discrimination, all of which...
Human Genetics01:28

Human Genetics

Human genetics provides a profound framework for understanding the interplay between genetic predispositions and human psychology. At the heart of this discipline lies the study of how genes influence physical traits, behaviors, and susceptibility to diseases. Each person carries a unique genetic code that subtly or significantly shapes their psychological and behavioral landscape.
The complex relationship between genetics and psychology is observable through common biological components such...
Traits, Mood, and Subjective Wellbeing01:22

Traits, Mood, and Subjective Wellbeing

Subjective well-being (SWB) refers to an individual's self-evaluation of their overall life satisfaction, happiness, and fulfillment. This multifaceted construct is typically assessed by analyzing the balance of positive and negative emotions alongside perceptions of life satisfaction. Personality traits such as neuroticism and extraversion are strongly associated with variations in SWB, offering critical insights into the underlying mechanisms of emotional well-being.
Neuroticism and Emotional...
Antidepressant Drugs: MAOIs and Other Agents01:23

Antidepressant Drugs: MAOIs and Other Agents

Atypical antidepressants, including bupropion (Wellbutrin), mirtazapine (Remeron), nefazodone (Serzone), trazodone (Desyrel), and vilazodone (Viibryd), offer unique mechanisms of action. Bupropion weakly inhibits dopamine and norepinephrine reuptake, aiding depression treatment and smoking cessation, with a low risk of sexual dysfunction. Mirtazapine enhances serotonin and norepinephrine neurotransmission, leading to sedation, increased appetite, and weight gain. As a result, it helps treat...

Self-Evaluation: Self-Enhancement and Self-Verification

Social psychologists have documented that feeling good about ourselves and maintaining positive self-esteem is a powerful motivator of human behavior (Tavris & Aronson, 2008). In the United States, members of the predominant culture typically think very highly of themselves and view themselves as good people who are above average on many desirable traits (Ehrlinger, Gilovich, & Ross, 2005). Often, our behavior, attitudes, and beliefs are affected when we experience a threat to our...

Summary

Increasing positive affect (PA) in at-risk adolescents shows promise for reducing depression and suicide risk. Interventions focusing on mindfulness, savoring, and gratitude may enhance PA and improve outcomes.

Area of Science:

  • Clinical Psychology
  • Adolescent Psychiatry
  • Mental Health Interventions

Background:

  • Low positive affect (PA) is linked to adolescent depression and suicide risk but is often overlooked in treatments.
  • Limited evidence exists on effective strategies to enhance PA in high-risk youth.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate if increases in PA predict lower depressive symptoms and suicide ideation (SI) in adolescents.
  • To examine if increases in mindfulness, savoring, and gratitude predict higher PA and lower depressive symptoms and SI.

Main Methods:

  • Pilot randomized controlled trial involving 52 adolescents (ages 12-18) hospitalized for suicide-related reasons.
  • Assessed changes in PA, mindfulness, savoring, gratitude, depressive symptoms, and SI over the intervention period.

Main Results:

  • Increases in PA prospectively predicted lower depressive symptoms and SI.
  • Increases in mindfulness and savoring predicted lower depressive symptoms and SI.
  • Mindfulness, savoring, and gratitude increases predicted higher PA.

Conclusions:

  • Positive affect (PA) is a viable transdiagnostic target for adolescent depression and suicide risk.
  • Mindfulness, savoring, and gratitude strategies may enhance PA in adolescents.
  • Further research with larger sample sizes is recommended to validate these findings.
