Health Literacy01:21

Health Literacy

Health literacy is an individual's or a community's capacity to comprehend, receive, read, and use relevant healthcare information and services. The World Health Organization (WHO, 2018) defines health literacy as the cognitive and social skills that determine the ability of individuals to gain access to, understand, and use information in ways that promote and maintain good health. As a result, the WHO helps individuals manage long-term health concerns, participate in preventative programs,...

Cancer Prevention

Several factors can increase the risk of cancer in an individual. About 50% of cancer cases can be prevented by adopting a healthy lifestyle, regular exercise, eating healthy, and following a modest cancer prevention diet. Epidemiological studies have consistently shown that populations with vegetable and fruit-rich diets have reduced the incidence of cancer. On the other hand, populations who have a diet rich in animal fat, red meat, junk food, or high calories are predisposed to cancer.

Levels of Health Promotion and Illness Prevention01:26

Levels of Health Promotion and Illness Prevention

Health promotion allows a person to control the determinants of health, resulting in an improved health status. It enhances the quality of life and reduces premature deaths. Health promotion and illness prevention programs help people make beneficial choices to reduce the risk of disease and disabilities. There are three health promotion and illness prevention levels: primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention.
In primary prevention, actions taken before disease onset prevent the disease from...
Community Based Intervention01:30

Community Based Intervention

Community-based interventions in mental health represent a paradigm shift from institution-centered care to treatments embedded within the fabric of local communities. By prioritizing inclusion and leveraging existing societal structures, this approach fosters a supportive environment conducive to addressing mental health challenges while promoting individual dignity and agency.
Foundations of Community Mental Health Programs
Central to the success of community-based interventions is the...
Models of Health Promotion and Illness Prevention II01:18

Models of Health Promotion and Illness Prevention II

The person's health status fluctuates continually, varying from being in good health to becoming ill and returning to being healthy. To understand the concept of illness prevention, there are two models. First, the health-illness continuum model is a graphic representation of an individual's wellness. It states that a person is considered healthy in the absence of physical disease and the presence of good emotional health.
The agent-host-environment model states that disease results from...

Summary

A community screening program improved knowledge about multiple myeloma (MM) and its precursor, Monoclonal Gammopathy of Undetermined Significance (MGUS). Early detection efforts can enhance cancer care communication and decision-making.

Area of Science:

  • Hematology
  • Oncology
  • Public Health

Background:

  • Multiple myeloma (MM) lacks federal screening guidelines and public awareness.
  • Understanding of MM is limited among the public and some primary care providers.
  • Community-based interventions are needed to address these gaps.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To establish the first community-based MM screening program and educational intervention.
  • To increase public and primary care provider knowledge of MM.
  • To improve early detection of MM.

Main Methods:

  • Partnered with community organizations to offer MM screening and education.
  • Distributed brochures, conducted blood tests for monoclonal protein, and surveyed participants on MM knowledge.
  • Provided continuing medical education (CME) on MM early detection for healthcare professionals.
  • Eligible participants were Black individuals aged 50 or older.

Main Results:

  • 199 participants completed screening across 22 events.
  • Knowledge about MM significantly increased post-intervention, particularly regarding its rarity and MGUS.
  • 21 participants (11%) were identified with MGUS.
  • 46 healthcare providers attended CME seminars.

Conclusions:

  • Community screening and education effectively improved MM knowledge retention.
  • Enhanced health literacy on MM risk factors can facilitate early detection.
  • Improved understanding may enhance patient-provider communication and decision-making in cancer care.
