Direct O-H insertion into alcohols has long remained a challenge in nitrene chemistry. We now report the first general photocatalytic strategy to address this gap, using sulfilimines as nitrene precursors to deliver the privileged hydroxamic acid ester pharmacophore from abundant alcohols under mild, additive-free conditions. The method features broad scope and excellent chemoselectivity and extends to the first nitrene insertion into aliphatic primary amines for N-N coupling.
