Summary

Individuals with Fuchs Endothelial Corneal Dystrophy (FECD) do not face an increased risk of developing most cancers. This large-scale study found no significant cancer risk alterations for FECD patients compared to the general population.

Background:

  • Fuchs Endothelial Corneal Dystrophy (FECD) is a progressive corneal disease.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between Fuchs Endothelial Corneal Dystrophy (FECD) and the risk of developing specific cancers.
  • To determine if FECD diagnosis alters the likelihood of various cancer diagnoses.

Main Methods:

  • A retrospective, population-based case-control study was conducted.
  • Data from the Utah Population Database and Utah Cancer Registry (1996-2022) were analyzed.
  • FECD cases (≥40 years) were matched with controls (3:1) and analyzed for 22 cancer types using logistic regression.

  • The study included 4,129 FECD cases and 12,371 controls.
