Radiomorphometric Analysis of the Greater Palatine Foramen with Clinical Implications
1Department of Dentomaxillofacial Radiology, Ordu University, Faculty of Dentistry, Ordu, Türkiye.
Context:
The greater palatine foramen (GPF) exhibits anatomical variability, and its radiomorphometric evaluation provides clinically relevant information for improving the safety and accuracy of dental and surgical procedures.
Aims:
This study aimed to evaluate the anatomical characteristics of the GPF using cone beam computed tomography (CBCT).
Settings And Design:
CBCT scans of 682 individuals were retrospectively analyzed.
Methods And Material:
Measurements included GPF and incisive foramen (IF) diameters, foraminal morphology and location, interforaminal distance (rGPF-lGPF), distances to the anterior/posterior nasal spines and midline palatal suture (MPS), the GPF-IF-MPS angle, and third molar eruption status.
Statistical Analysis Used:
Descriptive statistics, normality tests, and appropriate parametric or nonparametric tests were applied for quantitative and categorical variables.
Results:
Significant differences in GPF morphology and dimensions were observed according to sex, age, and third molar eruption status. Males generally demonstrated larger GPF measurements and related anatomical distances. Individuals with erupted third molars and older age group (>25 years) also showed increased GPF dimensions. Overall, these findings indicate that GPF anatomy is influenced by demographic and dental factors, which may be relevant for clinical procedures.
Conclusions:
GPF morphology varies according to sex, age, and third molar status. These variations should be considered during clinical planning, and CBCT evaluation may be beneficial in selected cases to enhance procedural safety and accuracy.
