Title:
The lonely business of online learning: An assessment and recommendations for mitigating social isolation in remote nursing education.
Aims:
Explore the impact of loneliness on nursing students in online learning environments, specifically for nurse educators, and to identify a framework that fosters connectedness among students, enhancing educational experiences and reducing risks faced by nurses who are entering or advancing in the workforce.
Background:
The article discusses the growing concern of loneliness and social isolation as prevalent across various demographics worldwide. It emphasizes the health risks associated with social disconnection. Loneliness is a global issue disproportionately affecting nurses and nursing students engaged in online learning.
Design:
Comprehensive literature review METHODS: A comprehensive literature review was conducted using a systematic search of databases, including PubMed, Google Scholar and CINAHL using MeSH terms "nursing students," and "online learning," "loneliness and online learning," "social isolation and nursing students", "suicidality in nurses and nursing students," "fostering belonging in nursing", "connectedness and community in learning", "global loneliness," and "expansion of remote nursing education programs."
Results:
There is a significant correlation between loneliness and impaired social and academic functioning among learners in remote nursing programs, mirroring loneliness and social isolation in the workforce. Specific interventions are identified as effective in enhancing social connections and providing support. The review highlights the necessity of integrating social interaction strategies into online curricula.
Conclusions:
Addressing loneliness is crucial for improving remote outcomes in nursing education. A sense of belonging protects against risks associated with social isolation. The article calls for a collaborative effort to foster connectedness to enhance online learning experience and strengthen the nursing workforce.
