Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the prevalence and odds of autoimmune and viral comorbidities in patients with lichen planus (LP) using real-world data.
  • To compare comorbidity patterns in LP patients against a matched control group.

Main Methods:

  • Analysis of electronic health records and claims data from over 112 million patients (2016-2024).
  • LP diagnosis defined by at least two ICD-10-CM codes (excluding drug-induced variants).
  • 1:1 matching of LP patients to controls based on age, sex, and race; calculation of odds ratios (ORs) and absolute risk differences (ARDs).

Main Results:

  • The study included 43,458 LP patients and matched controls.

  • The association with autoimmune conditions is more pronounced than with viral infections like Hepatitis C.
  • Findings contribute to understanding LP pathogenesis and comorbidity profiles but do not currently alter clinical management guidelines.
