Objectives:
Providing care for older adults can limit informal caregivers' time for social engagement, potentially affecting their mental health. This study examines how missing social activities, and particularly those perceived as important, are associated with depressive symptoms among informal caregivers.
Methods:
We used data from the 2022 National Study of Caregiving linked with the 2022 National Health and Aging Trends Study to analyze the relationship between missed social activities and depressive symptoms. The interaction of gender and independent variable is used to examine the moderating effect of gender. The analytical sample consists of 2,116 informal caregivers.
Results:
Caregivers who missed any social activity had 88% higher odds of experiencing depressive symptoms compared to those who did not. Missing one or more activities perceived as important was associated with 131% higher odds. The interaction test showed no statistically significant moderating effect of gender, while the gender stratified analysis showed that female caregivers had greater odds of depressive symptoms when missing important activity than missing any activity.
Conclusion:
The perceived importance of social activities is strongly associated with caregivers' mental health. Interventions should recognize the value caregivers place on different types of social engagement and address gender-specific preferences and needs.
