Background:

Perspective-taking involves understanding mental states.
Existing tasks often overlook prompt type effects.
A new task is needed for social anxiety research.

Purpose of the Study:

To develop and validate a novel perspective-taking task.
To investigate the impact of ambiguous versus unambiguous prompts.
To assess task performance in community samples.

Main Methods:

Developed a perspective-taking task with ambiguous and unambiguous prompts in a social context.
Administered the task to two community samples (N=69 ambiguous, N=89 unambiguous).
Analyzed task performance for self-perspective-taking, other perspective-taking, and perspective switching.

Main Results:

Both prompt types successfully cued self- and other-perspective-taking.
Unambiguous prompts, but not ambiguous ones, cued perspective switching.
No significant differences in overall perspective-taking were found when participants completed both prompt types.

Conclusions:

The newly developed task effectively measures prompted perspective-taking regardless of prompt type.
Unambiguous prompts are more sensitive for assessing perspective switching.
Unambiguous prompts show greater potential for neural research applications.
