Summary

Drinking one cup of coffee or less daily may reduce the risk of atrial fibrillation (AF). Higher coffee consumption does not appear to significantly impact AF risk, according to this meta-analysis.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To conduct a meta-analysis of prospective studies to clarify the association between coffee consumption and the risk of new-onset atrial fibrillation (AF).
  • To evaluate dose-response relationships between different levels of daily coffee intake and AF risk.

Main Methods:

  • A systematic literature search was performed in PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Library up to November 30, 2025.
  • Included studies were cohort or nested case-control designs with participants having no prior AF history.
  • The primary outcome assessed was the risk of new-onset AF in relation to coffee consumption.

Main Results:

  • Nine observational cohorts comprising 704,121 individuals and 35,253 new-onset AF cases were included.
  • Consuming 1 cup or less of coffee daily was associated with a reduced risk of new-onset AF (RR: 0.96; 95% CI: 0.93-0.99).
  • Higher coffee consumption (1-3 cups/d, 3-5 cups/d, ≥4 cups/d, ≥5 cups/d) did not show a significant association with new-onset AF risk.

Conclusions:

  • Consuming up to one cup of coffee daily may offer a protective effect against developing new-onset atrial fibrillation.
  • Increased coffee intake beyond one cup per day was not significantly linked to either an increased or decreased risk of AF.
  • These findings contribute to understanding the cardiovascular implications of moderate coffee consumption.
