Bariatric surgery and prostate cancer screening: insights into preventive men's health

Abstract:
Obesity is an established risk factor for aggressive prostate cancer and remains a major global health concern. Beyond metabolic and weight-related benefits, bariatric surgery may also influence patients' engagement with preventive healthcare services. Recent population-based data evaluating men aged 50-65 years who underwent bariatric surgery demonstrated a significant increase in prostate cancer screening rates following surgery compared with obese and non-obese control groups. These findings suggest that bariatric surgery may serve as a catalyst for improved adherence to preventive health measures, likely driven by increased interaction with healthcare systems during the perioperative period. Leveraging bariatric surgery as an opportunity to promote guideline-based cancer screening and broader preventive interventions may enhance long-term men's health outcomes. Further research is warranted to explore mechanisms underlying this association and its implications for preventive healthcare strategies.
