Background:
Screen time (ST) has become a critical factor influencing adolescent health. With the rapid expansion of smartphones, tablets, computers and internet access, the ways in which they interact with their environment have undergone massive transformation. This study focuses on the use of screen time and its association with demographic and lifestyle factors in Chennai, India.
Methods:
The study was a descriptive cross-sectional study among 610 adolescents (53.3% from government aided schools and 46.7% from private school) from Chennai. Data was collected using structured proforma and validated questionnaire (QueST) that was then analysed for ST determinants.
Results:
The study revealed an average ST of 2.45 ± 1.19 hours on weekdays and 4.21 ± 1.94 hours on weekends. Recreational activities such as video, gaming and social media were the predominant contributors. Increased ST (>2 hours/day) was significantly associated with age (17 years), gender (female), type of school (private), decreased sleep duration, absence of physical activity, incomplete homework, lack of peer interaction, spectacle use and overweight/obesity.
Conclusion:
The average ST spent by adolescents is more than the recommendation. This study highlights the need for optimal ST practices for promoting a balanced lifestyle among Adolescents.
