Radiology Challenging Case Competition: A Mentoring/Education Opportunity for Medical Students

Rationale And Objectives:
An educational intervention was introduced to improve faculty access for medical students applying to Radiology residency.
Materials And Methods:
A mentoring/education intervention was introduced in August 2022 one month before ERAS submission. Students worked with a faculty mentor to format a challenging radiology case using a standardized ten-slide template. The project transitioned to an annual competition in July 2023, beginning 2.5 months before ERAS. Required nine-minute oral presentations occurred during the week of ERAS opening to selected faculty (organizers, mentors, judges, moderators). Student feedback was collected with an online survey with 10 statements evaluating faculty support, learning experience, and usefulness in their residency applications. Iterative project improvements were made annually based on student/faculty feedback.
Results:
Over 4 years, 97.4% (37/38) of eligible students participated and were efficiently matched with a faculty mentor. Incremental increases in student participation (100%), faculty roles (166.7%), and presentation session attendance (653.3%) occurred. Student surveys showed highly favorable ratings across all domains (mean 4.52-5.0/5, SD 0-1.03) over three years. The students felt more prepared for residency interviews (mean 4.58/5, SD 0.85).
Conclusion:
This mentoring/education intervention efficiently matched medical students with faculty mentors before the Radiology residency application process. The students rated this annual case competition highly and felt more prepared for residency interviews.
