Objective:
This study evaluated the optimization of a medication-related clinical decision support system (MRCDSS) in a 1000-bed general hospital in China by analyzing clinician responses.
Methods:
The indices "Alert generation rate," "Pharmacist review appropriateness rate," "Prescription appropriateness," and "Override rates" were assessed for senior and junior clinicians before (March-May 2021) and after optimization (March-May 2023).
Results:
Significant reductions in "Alert generation" and "Total override rates," and significant increases in "Pharmacist review appropriateness rate" and "Prescription appropriateness rate" were observed across all clinician levels. MRCDSS optimization improved prescription appropriateness more efficiently in junior clinicians, whereas senior clinicians had a greater impact on MRCDSS decision making.
Discussion:
The findings confirm the value of continuous MRCDSS optimization in enhancing prescription quality, reducing alert generation and override rates, and improving the consensus between clinicians and pharmacists.
Conclusion:
We confirmed the importance of constant optimization in the application of the MRCDSS in clinical settings.
