Does Suture Choice Matter? Vicryl versus Monocryl in Subcutaneous Fat Closure

Abstract:
Wound complications following lower segment cesarean section (LSCS) contribute significantly to postoperative morbidity, prolonged hospital stay, and patient dissatisfaction. The choice of suture material for subcutaneous fat closure plays a crucial role in wound healing outcomes. Absorbable sutures such as polyglactin 910 (Vicryl) and poliglecaprone 25 (Monocryl) differ in their tensile strength, absorption profile, and tissue reactivity. We report 50 cases of a primigravida undergoing LSCS in whom subcutaneous fat was closed with Vicryl for 25 patients, and Monocryl was used for subcutaneous fat closure in the other 25 patients. Postoperative wound healing, pain, seroma formation, infection, and cosmetic outcome were compared. Monocryl demonstrated superior early wound comfort, reduced induration, and better cosmetic satisfaction, while Vicryl was associated with increased local inflammatory response. This case highlights the potential advantages of Monocryl for subcutaneous fat closure in LSCS.
