Background:
This study investigates the relationship between mobile phone usage time and various physical factors, including neck muscle endurance (flexors), head posture, hand grip strength, lateral grip strength, and postural control in healthy young adults.
Objective:
To determine the relationship between smartphone usage time and changes in neck muscle endurance, head posture, grip strength and postural control.
Methods:
A total of 58 participants (35 women, 23 men) aged 18-35 were included. Phone usage time was recorded using data from the participants' smartphones. Postural control was evaluated in two conditions: static standing and while reading text, using the Tekscan MatScan™ Pressure Mat System. Hand grip strength was measured with a hand dynamometer, lateral grip strength with a pinch meter, and neck flexor endurance with a chronometer. Head posture was assessed through lateral photographs.
Results:
The findings revealed a low but significant positive correlation (r ≤ 0.4, p ≤ 0.05) between phone usage time and postural control, with the Center of Pressure (CoP) variance increasing with longer phone use in both conditions. Additionally, phone usage was positively correlated with hand grip strength (p:0.019, r:0.308). Notably, individuals who used their phones for more than 5 h showed significantly higher CoP variance during static standing compared to those with less usage (p: 0.021).
Conclusion:
Increased phone usage time is associated with deteriorated postural control and improved hand grip strength. Excessive smartphone use may influence musculoskeletal health.
