Poor sleep quality in older adults significantly impairs physical performance, including lower-limb function and dominant hand grip strength. Addressing sleep issues may enhance mobility and independence in the elderly.
Area of Science:
- Gerontology
- Sleep Medicine
- Physical Performance
Background:
- Aging is associated with declining physical performance, increasing risks of falls, dependency, and mortality.
- Poor sleep quality is a common complaint in older adults and may contribute to reduced physical function.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the impact of sleep quality on the physical performance of elderly individuals.
Main Methods:
- 128 participants aged 60+ in Delhi-NCR were assessed using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) to categorize sleep quality (good: PSQI < 5, poor: PSQI > 5).
- Physical performance was evaluated using the Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB), hand-held dynamometry for upper limb strength, and the Box and Block test for manual dexterity.
Main Results:
- Individuals with poor sleep quality exhibited significantly worse performance in SPPB components (balance, gait speed, chair stand test) and reduced dominant hand grip strength compared to those with good sleep quality.
- No significant differences were found in non-dominant hand grip strength or manual dexterity between the good and poor sleep quality groups.
Conclusions:
- Poor sleep quality is linked to diminished lower-limb performance and reduced grip strength in the dominant hand among older adults.
- Incorporating sleep assessments into geriatric care could help maintain elderly independence, mobility, and overall well-being, aligning with healthy aging goals.
