Background:
Stroke survivors exhibit gait inefficiencies with increased energy expenditure, potentially linked to kinematic deficits. This exploratory study examined whether peak sagittal joint angles predict Energy Expenditure Index (EEI) during walking.
Methods:
Gait analysis of 14 stroke survivors used video recording and KINOVEA software (version 0.9.5). to measure peak hip flexion (swing), peak knee extension (stance phase) and peak ankle dorsiflexion (swing phase). Energy expenditure index was calculated from heart rate and walking velocity. Spearman's correlation coefficient assessed relationships.
Results:
No significant correlation existed between peak hip flexion angle in swing phase (r = 0.055, p = 0.852), peak knee extension angles in stance phase (r = 0.252, p = 0.385) and peak ankle dorsiflexion angles (r = 0.040, p = 0.892) with EEI. Mean EEI was 231 ± 543.4.
Conclusion:
Peak sagittal joint angles do not predict EEI in sub-acute/chronic stroke survivors. Clinicians should adopt multifactorial assessments beyond isolated kinematics for evaluating gait energy efficiency.
