Brain Imaging

Brain imaging technologies provide critical insights into both the structure and function of the human brain, enabling medical professionals and researchers to diagnose, study, and treat neurological disorders or psychiatric disorders more effectively.
These technologies include computerized axial tomography (CAT or CT scans), positron-emission tomography (PET scans),  magnetic resonance imaging (MRI),  functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), and Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS).

Summary

Massage therapy for neuropathic pain (NP) reduces brain hyperactivity, particularly in the hippocampus. This study shows acupoint massage normalizes neural activity, offering a potential biomarker for pain management.

Area of Science:

  • Neuroscience
  • Pain Research
  • Medical Imaging

Background:

  • Neuropathic pain (NP) involves maladaptive brain reorganization.
  • Central mechanisms of massage therapy's analgesic effects are unclear.
  • Investigated acupoint massage in a rat model of sciatic nerve injury using rs-fMRI.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To examine acupoint massage effects on spontaneous neural activity in a rat model of chronic constriction injury (CCI).
  • To understand the central mechanisms of massage therapy for neuropathic pain.

Main Methods:

  • Used a rat model of sciatic nerve CCI (N=45).
  • Administered daily acupoint pressing therapy for 14 days.
  • Assessed pain behavior (PWT, PWL) and spontaneous neural activity (ALFF via rs-fMRI).

Main Results:

  • CCI induced significant alterations in brain regions related to sensory, affective, and cognitive processing.
  • Massage significantly reduced hippocampal hyperactivity by day 7 (p = 0.0357).
  • Massage improved pain thresholds (PWT, PWL) from day 7 onwards.

Conclusions:

  • Massage therapy alleviates NP by modulating brain activity, particularly hippocampal plasticity.
  • Early normalization of hippocampal hyperactivity may be a neuroimaging biomarker for massage analgesia.
  • Provides evidence supporting massage for clinical NP management.
