Summary

Gentle rocking during sleep improved sleep quality for individuals with insomnia by reducing fragmentation and increasing efficiency. However, rocking did not enhance overnight memory performance in this population.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the effects of nocturnal rocking stimulation on sleep quality and memory consolidation in individuals with sleep difficulties.
  • To determine if rocking can improve objective and subjective sleep parameters in poor sleepers.
  • To examine the impact of rocking on NREM (non-rapid eye movement) oscillations, specifically fast spindles and slow waves.

Main Methods:

  • 16 young adults with subjective and objective sleep difficulties participated in a laboratory study.
  • Participants underwent two nights of polysomnography: one with continuous rocking (0.25 Hz, lateral) and one stationary.
  • Sleep architecture, sleep efficiency, sleep fragmentation, and declarative memory consolidation were assessed.

Main Results:

  • Nocturnal rocking significantly decreased sleep fragmentation, time awake, and time in light sleep (N1).
  • Objective sleep efficiency and subjective sleep quality were significantly improved by rocking.
  • Rocking enhanced NREM fast spindles and slow oscillations, replicating neural entrainment effects.
  • Overnight declarative memory consolidation was not significantly modulated by the rocking intervention.

Conclusions:

  • Nocturnal rocking alleviates sleep fragmentation and improves sleep quality in individuals with chronic insomnia symptoms.
  • Rocking demonstrates a neural entrainment effect on key sleep oscillations, even in poor sleepers.
  • While beneficial for sleep quality, rocking's current application does not enhance memory consolidation in this population.
  • Rocking may serve as a potential non-pharmacological intervention for managing certain aspects of chronic insomnia.
