Objective:
Characterize the paced bottle-feeding (PBF) Checklist, evaluate its preliminary reliability and validity, and examine associations between PBF adherence, feeding practices, and sociodemographic characteristics.
Methods:
Interrater reliability of the coding scheme was assessed using intraclass correlations from a secondary analysis of data from a within-subject experimental study of mother-infant feeding interactions. General linear models determined associations between PBF and key variables.
Results:
Coders achieved good interrater reliability (intraclass correlation = 0.81). Paced bottle-feeding scores significantly higher during the PBF condition than in the typical bottle-feeding condition (P = 0.01). Scores associated with family income (P = 0.009) and federal assistance program participation (P < 0.001), with higher scores for mothers with higher income and those not participating in federal assistance programs.
Conclusions And Implications:
The checklist is a practical tool for clinical use, enabling tailored education for bottle-feeding families. Future research can explore its impact on infant growth trajectories and expand its use to other caregivers.
