Color moiré reduction and resolution enhancement in flat-panel integral 3D displays using polarization gratings
Abstract:
Integral three-dimensional (3D) displays using direct-view flat panels suffer from color moiré caused by subpixel sampling resulting from elemental lenses. We propose two methods to mitigate this problem: dynamic optical-wobbling spatiotemporal multiplexing using polarization gratings and static ray shift. Optical wobbling reduces color moiré and doubles the elemental image resolution, thereby improving the depth reproduction; flicker interference is eliminated by employing high-frame-rate panels. Static ray shift, although lacking in resolution enhancement, offers a simple configuration to suppress color moiré without introducing flicker. These approaches provide practical solutions for improving the image quality in integral 3D displays.
