Highly linear directly modulated DFB laser towards pre-distortion-free FMCW LiDAR

We present a highly linear two-section distributed feedback (DFB) laser for pre-distortion-free frequency-modulated continuous wave (FMCW) light detection and ranging (LiDAR) applications. The device achieved a frequency excursion of 2.9 GHz and chirp nonlinearities as low as 0.65% of up-ramp and 0.28% of down-ramp sweeps with an output power of 40 mW, a side-mode suppression ratio (SMSR) of 42 dB, and an intrinsic linewidth of 586 kHz, before applying any pre-distortion algorithm or other nonlinearity compensation techniques. A proof-of-concept experiment successfully demonstrates range and velocity measurements.
