Relationship Formation02:12

Relationship Formation

What do you think is the single most influential factor in determining with whom you become friends and whom you form romantic relationships? You might be surprised to learn that the answer is simple: the people with whom you have the most contact. This most important factor is proximity. You are more likely to be friends with people you have regular contact with. For example, there are decades of research that shows that you are more likely to become friends with people who live in your dorm,...

Models of Health Promotion and Illness Prevention II

The person's health status fluctuates continually, varying from being in good health to becoming ill and returning to being healthy. To understand the concept of illness prevention, there are two models. First, the health-illness continuum model is a graphic representation of an individual's wellness. It states that a person is considered healthy in the absence of physical disease and the presence of good emotional health.
The agent-host-environment model states that disease results from...

Psychoneuroimmunology: Cardiovascular Disease

Psychoneuroimmunology (PNI) is a multidisciplinary field that examines how psychological factors, particularly stress, interact with the immune system and impact physical health. Research in PNI has shown that chronic or traumatic stress can disrupt both the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis and the sympathetic nervous system. These disruptions contribute to serious health conditions, including cardiovascular diseases.
A key area of focus in PNI is the relationship between stress and coronary...
Factors Affecting Illness01:18

Factors Affecting Illness

When a person's physical, emotional, intellectual, social development or spiritual functioning is compromised, this deviation from a healthy normal state is called illness. Illness creates stress that in turn harms individuals. Irritation, anger, denial, hopelessness, and fear are behavioral and emotional changes an individual experiences in the phases of illness. A variety of factors influence a person's health and well-being.
For instance, risk factors are connected to illness, disability,...
Social Relationships and Well-Being01:30

Social Relationships and Well-Being

The significance of social relationships in psychological well-being is a well-established area of inquiry within social psychology. Research consistently demonstrates that the presence of meaningful, supportive relationships enhances emotional health, while the absence or deterioration of such connections can contribute to psychological distress. Relationships serve as a foundation for emotional support, identity, and social belonging, all of which are critical to an individual’s overall...
Stress and Mental Health01:30

Stress and Mental Health

Chronic stress profoundly affects mental health, significantly influencing mood, behavior, and overall quality of life. Research closely links chronic stress with mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety, and substance use disorders. Ongoing exposure to stress can lead to physiological and psychological changes, initiating a cycle of emotional distress and maladaptive coping mechanisms.
Individuals with depression often experience challenges in both their personal and professional...

Area of Science:

  • Public Health
  • Psychology
  • Sociology

Background:

  • Intimate partner violence (IPV) is linked to adverse physical and mental health in women.
  • Factors bolstering resilience in women experiencing IPV require further investigation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To examine factors associated with resilience in women exposed to IPV.
  • To investigate the mediating role of resilience in the relationship between IPV exposure and physical health.

Main Methods:

  • A telephone survey was conducted with 242 Lebanese and Syrian women exposed to IPV.
  • Statistical analyses assessed associations between resilience and various demographic, socioeconomic, and health factors.

Main Results:

  • Resilience showed positive correlations with age and personal income.
  • Resilience was negatively associated with household crowding, depression, anxiety, somatic symptoms, PTSD, food/clothing insecurity, and positively with feeling safe and community support.
  • Resilience significantly mediated the link between IPV exposure and physical health.

Conclusions:

  • Resilience is a key factor for women exposed to IPV, influencing their physical health.
  • Interventions aimed at strengthening resilience may mitigate the negative health impacts of IPV.
  • Community support and personal safety contribute to resilience in IPV survivors.
