Abstract:
An upgrade to the DIII-D phase contrast imaging (PCI) diagnostic for detection of radio frequency waves has been implemented using low-noise optical heterodyning. Electro-optical modulation allows detection of waves with frequencies up to 500 MHz with wide flexibility restricted only by the driver electronics, with continuous adjustability up to 100 MHz and fixed frequency drivers needed for higher frequencies. The PCI diagnostic images the line-integrated plasma density fluctuations and provides absolutely calibrated measurements with good wavenumber resolution.
