Abstract:
A novel lead vanadate oxyfluoride, PbVO2F2, has been successfully synthesized via the hydrothermal method. The compound PbVO2F2 features a simple one-dimensional trellis ladder architecture built from V4+ ions, with adjacent VO4F2 octahedra connected through edge- and corner-sharing oxygen atoms. Magnetic measurements show that PbVO2F2 possesses a spin-singlet ground state with a spin gap of ∼40 K. Our analysis of the spin exchanges in PVO2F2 reveals that each trellis ladder chain of V4+ ions forms a uniform antiferromagnetic (AFM) chain made up of ferromagnetic (FM) dimers and undergoes a short-range order (SRO) fluctuation and that the observed spin gap is related to the local excitation energy needed for an FM spin dimer to spin flip in the AFM clusters generated in each AFM trellis ladder chain due to the SRO fluctuation.

Spin–Spin Coupling: Two-Bond Coupling (Geminal Coupling)
The central atom need not be NMR-active because its electrons are affected by the electron polarization of the spin-active atoms. However, spin information is transmitted less effectively than in one-bond coupling, and 2J values are usually weaker than 1J values. The energy of...
