A Preliminary Study Investigating the Self-Reported Effects of Amplification on Singers

Objective:
Electronic amplification is integral to contemporary singing performance, yet its effects on singers' vocal experience and function remain underexplored. This study aimed to characterize professional singers' self-reported experiences with amplification, including auditory monitoring challenges, compensatory vocal behaviors, and post-performance outcomes.
Methods:
A cross-sectional, survey-based study was conducted using an online questionnaire administered to professional singers who regularly perform with electronic amplification. The survey included items addressing demographics, performance context, amplification equipment and oversight, auditory monitoring challenges, vocal adjustments during performance, and post-performance vocal and psychological effects. Descriptive statistics were calculated.
Results:
A total of 701 complete responses were analyzed. Difficulty hearing (87.6%) and sound distortion (58.0%) were frequently reported. A substantial proportion of respondents reported adjusting their vocal production in response to amplification challenges, including pushing vocally or increasing effort (81.7%). Post-performance consequences were also common, with vocal fatigue (72.9%) and dissatisfaction or embarrassment regarding performance outcomes (69.0%) frequently reported.
Conclusions:
Amplification-related challenges are widely reported among professional singers and are associated with increased vocal effort, compensatory vocal behaviors, and negative post-performance outcomes. These findings highlight amplification as a potentially important factor in singers' vocal demands and support the need for further research on its implications for vocal health and performance.
