Summary

Human identification relies on unique patterns. This study found no significant correlation between lip prints (cheiloscopic patterns), fingerprints (dermatoglyphic patterns), and facial growth patterns, except for a minor link in females.

Area of Science:

  • Forensic Science
  • Anthropology
  • Genetics

Background:

  • Human identification is crucial in forensic and anthropological studies.
  • Cheiloscopic (lip print) and dermatoglyphic (fingerprint) patterns are unique identifiers.
  • Understanding potential correlations with growth patterns can enhance identification methods.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the correlation between lip print patterns, fingerprint patterns, and facial growth patterns.
  • To determine if these biometric traits can be linked for improved human identification.

Main Methods:

  • Lip prints were collected using lipstick and adhesive tape, classified using Suzuki and Tsuchihashi's system.
  • Fingerprints were recorded using inkless stamp pads.
  • Statistical analysis was performed to identify correlations between cheiloscopic, dermatoglyphic, and growth patterns.

Main Results:

  • No significant correlation was found between cheiloscopic patterns, dermatoglyphic patterns, and growth patterns overall.
  • A statistically significant association was observed between the loop pattern of fingerprints and a horizontal growth pattern in females (p=0.04).

Conclusions:

  • Lip prints and fingerprints are generally independent of facial growth patterns.
  • The minor correlation found in females suggests limited potential for combined analysis in specific demographic groups.
