Insights
Moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) significantly reduces perinatal mood and anxiety disorders (PMADs) risk and severity. Healthcare providers can bridge the gap in MVPA participation by offering guidance and tools to improve maternal mental health.
Area of Science:
- Obstetrics and Gynecology
- Maternal Mental Health
- Public Health
Background:
- Perinatal mood and anxiety disorders (PMADs) affect up to 20% of individuals, impacting maternal and infant well-being.
- Moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) is a proven, cost-effective intervention for reducing PMADs, comparable to psychotherapy.
- Low adherence to MVPA recommendations (<15%) stems from safety concerns, lack of guidance, and social barriers.
Purpose of the Study:
- To highlight the underutilization of MVPA in perinatal mental health.
- To emphasize the role of obstetrical care providers in promoting safe physical activity.
- To advocate for evidence-based counseling and tools to increase MVPA participation.
Main Methods:
- Review of evidence on MVPA benefits for PMADs.
- Analysis of barriers to MVPA adherence in the perinatal period.
- Identification of strategies for healthcare providers to promote physical activity.
Main Results:
- MVPA offers significant benefits for reducing PMAD risk and severity.
- Safety concerns and limited guidance are primary barriers to MVPA.
- Obstetrical providers can effectively promote MVPA through counseling and validated tools.
Conclusions:
- Increased MVPA participation can improve perinatal mental health outcomes.
- Evidence-based counseling and tools like the Get Active Questionnaire are crucial.
- Healthcare providers play a vital role in overcoming barriers to perinatal physical activity.
Abstract:
Perinatal mood and anxiety disorders (PMADs) affect up to 20% of perinatal patients and can lead to adverse maternal and infant outcomes. Moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) is a safe, cost-effective, and underutilized intervention that reduces the risk and severity of PMADs, with benefits comparable to psychotherapy. Despite this evidence, fewer than 15% of perinatal individuals meet MVPA recommendations due to safety concerns, limited guidance, and social barriers. Obstetrical care providers can reduce this gap by offering evidence-based counselling and using tools like the Get Active Questionnaire for Pregnancy and Postpartum to support safe participation during the perinatal period, improving mental health outcomes.

The Role of Exercise in Stress Management
Regular physical activity is essential for reducing stress and promoting cardiovascular health. Exercise strengthens the heart, enhances blood flow, keeps blood vessels flexible, and helps lower blood pressure, all of which reduce the body's stress response.
