MRI for patients with autism: evaluating radiologic technologists' awareness and practice in Saudi healthcare

Background:
MRI can be challenging for patients with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) due to sensory sensitivities and radiologic technologists (RTs) play a key role in managing these challenges. Therefore, this study aims to assess Saudi RTs' knowledge, practices, and experiences in managing individuals with ASD undergoing MRI, as well as identify barriers and facilitators of effective practice.
Methods:
A cross-sectional, mixed-methods study was conducted using an online questionnaire (n = 335) and semi-structured interviews (n = 8). Data collection occurred between April and May 2023, and the results were analyzed using SPSS v25 and thematic analysis.
Results:
Only 13% of RTs had formal training in ASD care. While knowledge scores were relatively high (61% high-level), practice and training scores were weak (51% and 50% low-level, respectively). In addition, a modest positive correlation was observed between training and practice domains (r = 0.121, p = 0.027). Moreover, thematic analysis highlighted three themes: RTs' knowledge gaps, variability in practice, and the need for clear guidelines.
Conclusion:
These results indicate that there is a significant gap between RTs' knowledge and practical readiness in handling individuals with ASD during MRI. Consequently, tailored training programs and standardized protocols are recommended.
