Contraception Use and Preferences Among Individuals Experiencing Homelessness Reached Through a Menstrual Health
Objectives:
Contraceptive use among unhoused pregnancy-capable individuals remains understudied. This study examines contraceptive use, barriers, and preferences among these individuals.
Study Design:
A 19-question survey was administered to 52 unhoused pregnancy-capable individuals in Phoenix, Arizona, assessing contraceptive use, access, and preferences for future contraceptive care and education.
Results:
Overall, 60% reported contraceptive use. While 67% wanted to avoid pregnancy, 10% desired it. The most used methods were barrier contraception (52%), abstinence (25%), and surgical sterilization (19%). Six percent used an intrauterine device (IUD); none used etonogestrel implants. Transportation (29%) and cost (25%) were the primary barriers to access. Participants preferred accessing contraception (63%) and receiving education (42%) from health care providers rather than street medicine teams or volunteers.
Conclusions:
Unhoused individuals reported different contraceptive patterns from the general population and preferred licensed providers for contraceptive care. Transportation and cost were the primary barriers to accessing care.

Hormonal Regulation of the Menstrual Cycle
At puberty, GnRH begins a pulsatile release pattern, which triggers the anterior pituitary gland to secrete follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH). The frequency and amplitude of GnRH pulses vary across the menstrual cycle, with faster pulses favoring LH release and slower pulses favoring FSH release.
Specialized Care Centers and Settings-II
Rural health centers are specialized care facilities in remote locations with very few medical personnel. The primary care providers who run the centers are mostly Registered Nurse Practitioners. Here, emergency treatment is provided to critically ill or injured patients before they are transferred to the closest hospital. Fortunately, due to advancement in technology, many rural healthcare facilities and professionals have easy access to diagnostic and treatment...
Hormonal Regulation of Blood Pressure
Epinephrine and Norepinephrine
The adrenal medulla releases epinephrine and norepinephrine, catecholamines that enhance and extend the sympathetic or "fight or flight" physiological response. These hormones escalate heart rate and the force of contraction while...

Managed Care System:
The managed care system is designed to control the cost while maintaining the quality of care. The patient's care from admission to discharge is planned by the primary care provider or the case manager, also known as the gatekeeper. In a managed care system, the number of care providers is limited...
