Evaluating Conventional Syringe with Camouflage Syringe with Starry Smile Quest: A Randomized Controlled Trial

Aim:
To evaluate the effectiveness of passive distraction during local anesthesia (LA) administration, this study uses a sensory-modified dental environment featuring partial darkness and lighting effects, comparing conventional and camouflage syringes.
Objective:
To evaluate the effect of administering LA using different syringe methods among children aged 6-11 years.
Methodology:
About 66 children who met the inclusion/exclusion criteria were randomly divided into three groups using the lottery method (group A = 22, group B = 22, and group C = 22).
Results:
Group C (camouflage syringe with Starry Smile Quest) showed significantly higher SpO2 levels, lower heart rates, reduced dental anxiety, and minimal pain compared to groups A and B (p < 0.05). These findings indicate superior physiological and psychological outcomes with the combined distraction technique.
Conclusion:
It has been shown that using camouflaged syringes with Starry Smile Quest can improve children's behavior and reduce their anxiety when administering LA. Additionally, the use of camouflaged syringes is advised as an alternative to traditional syringes for LA.
