Cold Atmospheric Plasma in Pediatric Dentistry: A Paradigm Shift toward Antibiotic-free Minimally Invasive Care

A revolutionary alternative to antibiotics, cold atmospheric plasma (CAP) provides a potent means of addressing the worldwide problem of antibiotic resistance. Its potential use in pediatric dentistry is yet mainly untapped, which emphasizes the necessity of focused study.

Using a thorough examination of 20 well-reviewed publications published between 2016 and 2025, this in-depth study looks at the antibacterial qualities, modes of action, safety concerns, and clinical uses of CAP in pediatric dental care. In order to rapidly and effectively eradicate microorganisms, CAP works by generating reactive oxygen and nitrogen species (RONS), which damage bacterial cell membranes and biofilms. Lactobacillus acidophilus and Streptococcus mutans are efficiently eradicated by CAP in a matter of seconds, cutting down on treatment time and easing patient worry. Additionally, CAP strengthens the enamel against microbial attacks by improving fluoride retention.

According to this review, CAP may be used in dentistry as a less invasive option to traditional antibiotics because it eases anxiety and does not add to the growing issue of resistance.

Despite its positive advantages, there are still several obstacles to overcome, like the requirement for cost-effectiveness, device standardization, and regulatory approval for kid-specific devices. Future research should concentrate more on improving CAP technology, investigating how it might be used with other dental advancements, and evaluating its long-term impacts on oral health results.
