Intravenous Procedural Sedation in Pediatric Dentistry:A Concise Review of Treatment Protocol

There is tremendous pressure on pediatric dental practitioners to ensure that treatment modalities are predictable and productive. In-office IV sedation ensures predictable and safe delivery of dental treatment in children.

When basic behavior guidance techniques (BGTs) fail to allay the anxiety and fear of a child, pediatric dentists advocate the delivery of dental treatment under general anesthesia (GA). However, judicious use of intravenous sedation can enable in-office delivery of dental care in these children.

Responsible sedation practice involves the selection of suitable candidates; adherence to safety protocols; ensuring the presence of professionals skilled in induction, monitoring, and resuscitation, if required; safe discharge; and appropriate follow-up. This article highlights the importance of all these steps involved in in-office IV sedation.

Performing dental treatment under IV sedation can be considered a valuable option in children when basic behavior management techniques have failed. Adherence to the 3P rule (right patients, correct protocols, and skilled personnel) ensures safe dental treatment under IV sedation.

Dental treatment under IV sedation can be considered for children who are indicated for procedures under GA but have limited treatment needs after due consideration of all the factors mentioned in this article. It can also be used to obtain emergency relief of pain or swelling when dental treatment under GA is delayed.
