Intravenous Dexamethasone for Serous Retinal Detachment After Laser Ablation for Retinopathy of Prematurity

Purpose: To describe the clinical course and management of serous retinal detachment following laser ablative therapy for retinopathy of prematurity (ROP). Methods: Two cases (4 eyes) were reviewed. Results: Four eyes from 2 patients who developed serous retinal detachments after undergoing laser ablative therapy for type 1 pre-threshold ROP were included. Both patients were treated with 0.6 mg/kg of intravenous dexamethasone every 6 hours, following a regimen commonly used in the management of bronchopulmonary dysplasia. All eyes demonstrated rapid resolution of serous retinal detachment following initiation of systemic corticosteroid therapy. No immediate treatment-related complications were observed. Conclusions: Intravenous dexamethasone may be a safe and effective treatment for serous retinal detachment after laser therapy for ROP. Further studies are needed to confirm these findings.
