Abstract:
Local hemostasis is widely used to control intraoperative bleeding. Among these approaches, locally acting hemostatic powders are particularly useful for managing bleeding across large areas in conventional surgery and for controlling bleeding in anatomically challenging sites during laparoscopic surgery, owing to their ability to be delivered using applicators such as powder dispensers. In this study, we developed DMSP (Daedeok plant medical devices surgiguard powder), a novel powder-type hemostatic agent with a porous structure composed of ORC and CMC. DMSP effectively promotes platelet aggregation and concentrates coagulation factors through rapid water absorption, thereby accelerating local clot formation. In our study, DMSP showed excellent clot-forming capacity and mechanical strength, and thromboelastography (TEG) analysis revealed a shorter time to coagulation onset and enhanced clot firmness. Similarly, DMSP also showed a strong hemostatic effect than commercially available products. These findings confirm the potential of DMSP as a next-generation hemostatic solution that improves the limitations of current powder-type products, such as insufficient hemostatic efficacy, delayed initiation of hemostasis, and slow clot formation. In addition, it demonstrates suitability for clinical applications in surgical procedures where significant bleeding control is required.
