Summary

Diode laser frenectomy significantly reduces postoperative pain and intraoperative bleeding compared to the scalpel technique. While wound healing showed no significant difference at seven days, laser use offers a less painful alternative for oral frenectomies.

Background:

  • Diode laser-assisted oral frenectomy is a minimally invasive technique for anatomical restrictions.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the clinical efficacy of diode laser-assisted frenectomy.
  • To compare diode laser frenectomy with the scalpel technique regarding postoperative discomfort, intraoperative hemorrhage, and wound healing.

Main Methods:

  • Systematic review and meta-analysis adhering to PRISMA guidelines.
  • Searched for comparative studies of diode laser vs. scalpel frenectomy (Jan 2015-Dec 2025).
  • Analyzed pooled outcomes (pain, hemorrhage, healing) using a random-effects model and assessed publication bias.

Main Results:

  • Fourteen studies were included in the meta-analysis.
  • Diode laser significantly reduced postoperative pain on day 1 and day 7.
  • Diode laser also significantly reduced intraoperative hemorrhage; wound healing at day 7 showed no significant difference.

Conclusions:

  • Diode laser-assisted frenectomy is effective in reducing postoperative pain and intraoperative hemorrhage.
  • No significant difference in wound healing was observed at seven days.
  • Future research should standardize wound healing metrics and include cost-effectiveness.
