Abstract:
A sustainable and healthy biosphere is the cornerstone of good health for all life forms. In the past decades, the probable role of environmental pollutants on the health of humans, aquatic life and wildlife has rekindled much interest among researchers. These pollutants are now established as the cause of plant and animal immunomodulation. Commercial use of polycarbonate plastics and epoxy resins produces a toxic phenolic chemical called bisphenol A (BPA), which has gained prominence. BPA has been shown to affect the neuro-endocrine and immune systems in both aquatic and human systems. Its effect on human foetuses and infants has been a significant cause of concern. It also has a role as an endocrine disruptor, causing grave developmental disorders in humans. This study aims at bringing the latest information on the immunotoxic and neurotoxic role played by this chemical in human and aquatic beings, and further highlights its emerging roles in behavioural alterations, immune dysfunction, oxidative stress, increased allergic responses and neurochemical disturbances.
