Abstract:
Muscular hydrostats, like the elephant trunk, face a fundamental biomechanical conflict between robust protection and delicate manipulation. How the skin, a critical structural and sensory component, resolves this paradox is largely unknown. Here, we reveal that the Asian elephant's trunk skin is a functionally graded, anisotropic biocomposite. Through integrated morphological and mechanical analysis, we demonstrate a stark dorsal-ventral dichotomy: the dorsal skin is 3.14 times stiffer and significantly rougher, forming a protective shield, while the more flexible ventral skin is specialized for conformal grasping. This ventral side possesses unique dermal papillae, which our finite-element models predict act as subsurface stress amplifiers, enhancing tactile sensitivity without compromising durability. These findings establish a biological blueprint for artificial tactile skins involved in robotic grasping and manipulation tasks, demonstrating that a functionally zoned architecture with embedded microstructures is a key strategy for resolving the grasp-protect paradox in soft robotics.

Sensory Functions of the Skin
There are two main categories of receptors on the skin: capsulated and non-capsulated. The non-capsulated ones are mainly the pain receptors. The capsulated ones can be further categorized based on the...
Accessory Structures of the Skin: Hair and Hair Follicles
Hair is a keratinous filament growing out of the epidermis. It is primarily made of dead, keratinized cells. Hair strands originate at the epidermal penetration called the hair follicle. The hair shaft is the part...
