Abstract:
Syphilis is a re-emerging global public health concern; recently, its incidence has significantly increased in all demographic groups. However, acute syphilitic posterior placoid chorioretinitis (ASPPC) and syphilitic optic neuropathy in a patient with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) co-infection are extremely uncommon. ASPPC is a rare ocular infectious condition caused by syphilis that results in potential blindness. Considering that ocular syphilis may present as an initial manifestation, screening for sexually transmitted diseases is warranted. Here, this article presents a successful treatment protocol that resulted in the complete resolution of a case of ASPPC and syphilitic optic neuropathy with HIV co-infection.
