Objective:
Cervical cancer affects nearly 3000 women each year in mainland France and is responsible for over 1000 deaths. In Reunion Island, the incidence and mortality rates are higher than in mainland France. The National Cancer Institute recommends an HPV test 6months after treatment of a precancerous lesion. This study evaluates the practices of healthcare professionals in Reunion Island regarding these recommendations.
Methods:
This retrospective study included all women who underwent surgery for a precancerous lesion between October 2019 and February 2021 in Reunion Island. Data were collected from several centers and included patient characteristics, treatment methods, and follow-up protocols. The primary objective was to assess the rate of HPV testing 6months post-treatment. The secondary objective was to evaluate HPV clearance.
Results:
Among the 760 patients, 38.3% were lost to follow-up. Of the 469 patients who were followed, 46.9% underwent an HPV test, with 79.5% completing the test at 6months. HPV clearance at 6months after conization was 52.9%.
Conclusion:
Post-treatment follow-up of patients in Reunion Island needs improvement. Less than half of the patients underwent HPV testing at 6months. Strict implementation of the recommendations could reduce the incidence and mortality rates of cervical cancer, which remain higher than in mainland France.
